Oni no Kobo, naming and branding
Oni no Kobo is an online store based in California, offering a range of fine goods inspired by Japanese culture. Their product lineup will include pins and patches, shirts, hats, skateboard decks, incense holders, and leather goods, with items either sourced from Japan or handcrafted locally.
The brand’s founders sought a name and visual identity that reflected Japanese influences without resorting to clichés. They wanted to incorporate elements of skate and tattoo culture while maintaining a minimalist, elegant, and dark aesthetic that conveyed a “badass” and handcrafted spirit. Additionally, they had a preference for geometric elements and flat design.
Thus, “Oni no Kobo,” meaning “The Demon’s Workshop,” was born. The brand’s logo showcases a Namanari mask, complemented by a minimalist color palette and geometric Japanese motifs and patterns, perfectly capturing the desired themes and identity.
