Chocolate box packaging
Kakuichi Yokocho and marco chocolaterie (Hiroshima) asked me to create a chocolate box for Valentine’s Day 2020.
As the chocolates were shaped like a caterpillar and a ladybird, I was immediately inspired by my favourite childhood book: The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle!
And that’s how I had the idea to create a book-shaped box with an apple inside, and the caterpillar coming out from it.
(Unfortunately, for cost reasons, it was not possible to show the caterpillar’s head through a small opening on the cover as I had originally planned).
For the back cover, I created a marbled paper with the colours of the apple.
The Very Hungry Caterpillar is still very popular in Japan where it’s called Hara peko aomushi. Paper marbling methods (that I produced digitally here) have been used since the 12th century and is known in Japan as suminagashi.
The design seems to have been extremely popular and the chocolate boxes sold out in just a few days!
